A Kansas City, Missouri, woman who sued a prominent transportation company following the death of her teenage son has settled with the business for $5 million. The wrongful death lawsuit revolved around a 2010 bus accident in which a school bus fatally struck the plaintiff's 16-year-old son.
In the lawsuit, the woman contended that the bus's driver only inspected the bus for 30 seconds, despite the vehicle still having a large amount of ice on its windows. Video footage from the bus shows the 23-year-old driver opening the bus's door at intersections in order to have a better view of the road. The woman claimed that these conditions ultimately led to her son's death.
More than a year after the fatal accident, the transportation company has settled with the woman, agreeing to pay the woman $5 million in damages. The victim's mother was relieved to end the legal dispute, explaining that she was grateful to hear an admission of wrongdoing on the bus company's part.
Additionally, the company has agreed to let the woman speak to drivers-in-training in order to stress the importance of proper safety when operating a vehicle as large as a school bus. She explained, "If I could save another life out there in training and educating people, I'm going to do it."
The transportation company declined to comment on the case, but it did confirm that the company admitted fault. The company is currently one of three businesses vying for a contract from the local school district. No word has been released on whether the recent litigation will affect the school board's decision.
